How to Prepare for a Headshot Shoot in London (And Get the Best Results)

You’ve booked your headshot session. Now what? A little preparation goes a long way, and the photographers who get the best results from their clients are the ones who help them show up ready. Here’s everything you need to know before your shoot.

1. Choose Your Outfits Carefully

Clothing is one of the biggest factors in how your headshots turn out. A few rules of thumb:

  • Solid colours work best. Busy patterns, logos and bold stripes draw the eye away from your face.
  • Wear what you’d wear to an important meeting. The goal is to look like the best version of your professional self.
  • Bring 2, 3 options. Different necklines and colours photograph differently. Having variety gives you flexibility on the day.
  • Avoid bright white next to your face, it can overexpose and wash out your skin tone.
  • Navy, slate grey, burgundy and forest green tend to photograph exceptionally well.

2. Sort Your Hair and Grooming the Day Before

If you’re getting a haircut, do it 3, 5 days before the shoot, not the day before. Fresh haircuts can look a little too sharp or unfamiliar. The same goes for any grooming treatments: give your skin time to settle.

On the day, keep hair and makeup looking natural. Heavy contouring or dramatic eye makeup can look great in person but often appears overdone on camera. The goal is to look like you, on a really good day.

3. Get a Good Night’s Sleep

This sounds obvious, but it matters enormously. Tired eyes are very hard to retouch away. A good night’s sleep means brighter eyes, better skin tone, and more energy during the shoot, all of which show up in the final images.

4. Know Your Purpose

Before the shoot, think about where these images will be used. LinkedIn? Your company website? Press releases? A casting portfolio? Each context has slightly different requirements, and communicating this to your photographer helps them frame shots appropriately, whether that’s a tight head-and-shoulders crop or a slightly wider frame with room for text overlay.

5. Don’t Worry About Posing

One of the most common concerns people have before a headshot session is that they don’t know how to pose. The good news: that’s entirely the photographer’s job. At Hozzphoto, every session includes full posing direction throughout. You won’t be left standing there wondering what to do with your hands.

The more relaxed you are, the better the shots. Trust the process, bring a couple of outfit options, and leave the technical stuff to us.

What to Expect on the Day

A typical Hozzphoto headshot session runs 45, 60 minutes. We’ll start with a quick chat to confirm the look and feel you’re going for, then move through different setups, adjusting angles, expressions and lighting as we go. By the end, you’ll have a strong variety of shots to choose from.

Edited images are usually delivered within 5 working days via a private online gallery.
