Author photography is one of the most overlooked investments a writer can make. Yet your author photo is everywhere: your book cover, your publisher’s website, review pages, social media, speaking engagements, podcast appearances. It’s the image people associate with your name and your work. Here’s how to approach it.
What Your Author Photo Needs to Communicate
The best author photos do three things: they look professional, they reflect the tone of your writing, and they feel like you. A thriller writer and a children’s author need very different images, even if both are excellent portraits. Before you book a shoot, think about your genre, your audience, and the message you want to send.
Location vs Studio
Author portraits work well in both settings, but the right choice depends on your work. Non-fiction writers, business authors and thought leaders often suit clean, minimal studio or office environments that reinforce credibility. Fiction writers, especially those working in literary, historical or atmospheric genres, can benefit from location shoots that place them in environments connected to their work or personality.
London offers tremendous variety for location author shoots: bookshop interiors, library spaces, park environments, urban architecture and historic streets all provide powerful backdrops.
How Many Images Do You Need?
Most authors need a minimum of three to five usable images: one primary portrait for widespread use, one or two alternatives with different expressions or framing, and at least one wider lifestyle or environment shot for website use and social media. A 45 to 60 minute session with Hozzphoto typically produces 15 to 25 edited images across a range of looks.
Publisher and Media Requirements
Publishers and media outlets typically request high-resolution files (at least 300dpi) suitable for both print and digital use. Make sure your photographer delivers full-resolution files with commercial usage rights included. At Hozzphoto, all portrait and headshot sessions include full commercial usage rights as standard.
