4 Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Hospitality Photographer

If you’re thinking of hiring a hospitality photographer for your restaurant, cafe or food brand, most people go straight to portfolio and price. But there are four questions that matter just as much and most people never think to ask them until it’s too late.

1. “Where can I use the images?”

Not all photography includes full usage rights. Before you book, get clear on exactly where you can use the images. Social media? Your website? Paid ads? Printed menus? Some photographers charge separately for commercial licensing or restrict usage to certain platforms. Make sure you know what’s included so there are no surprises when you want to run a campaign six months later.

2. “What’s actually included in the shoot?”

Hours on site, number of dishes covered, team shots, venue and interior photography, food styling support — every photographer packages things differently. Knowing exactly what you’re getting before the day helps you plan properly, brief your team, and make sure you’re getting the most value from the session. If it’s not written down, ask for it in writing.

3. “Do I receive the raw images?”

This one matters more than most clients realise. Most professional photographers — myself included — don’t deliver raw files, because they’re unfinished work. A raw file straight from the camera hasn’t been colour graded, retouched or optimised. Your final gallery should be fully edited, polished and ready to use. If a photographer offers raw files as a selling point, that’s worth questioning.

4. “What’s the turnaround time?”

When do you actually receive your images? If you’ve got a menu launch, a campaign or a seasonal promotion coming up, timing is everything. Make sure the delivery window aligns with your plans. At Hozzphoto, most shoots are delivered within 5 working days — because I know you need to move quickly.

Hospitality photography isn’t just about beautiful food shots. It’s about having the right assets to grow your business — images that work on your website, your menus, your Google profile and your social media simultaneously.

If you’re a hospitality brand wanting imagery that works as hard as you do, I’m always happy to have a conversation about what you need.
